Agreements, goats and rucking
A recap of The My Home Office Hacks 4th of July weekend in reverse
A friend/life coach, Andrew Mundy, shared Steve Chandler’s take on Agreements vs. Expectations. It’s a life-altering take and will dramatically improve your work-from-home experience.
Why it matters
Employers and clients expect you will get your work done. Yet do you or have you ever made an agreement that X will be done by a certain date? Or put that in writing? Even if it’s an agreement with yourself?
Go deeper
An expectation that something will be done leads to disappointment. Largely because those expectations exist in our head. Or if they are verbalized, the expectation is vague (e.g. “get it done ASAP”)
Additionally, your values or interpretation could be vastly different than the other person's. If you were performing this task, you would have it done by this date and leave time for review. The person doing the work might think turning the work in at the deadline is fine.
The WFH angle
Creating an agreement with the people you do business with, preferably in writing, clarifies expectations for both sides.
Big picture
For a more detailed explanation of Chandler’s premise, here’s a LinkedIn post that explains it better.
Now, the goats
Yours truly marched with a friend in a 4th of July parade—and goats. The friend is running for the local state legislature. The goats are not. But they’ve apparently been wonderful pets and my friend wanted them along.
Why?
Well, they are very cute.
Next and most importantly, they make for a great campaign slogan: Scott is the GOAT.
Why it matters
Yes, working from home can be isolating. It also opens the door to possibilities. I call them WTFN opportunities. You probably know the first three letters. The last stands for “not”.
Going deeper
A morning walking with goats or any other WFTN activity has many benefits:
People and animal time minimizes isolation
A break from the routine of daily life.
Anticipation of the next WTFN opportunity.
What was your last WTFN opportunity?

Finally, Rucking
My mother has leukemia. First diagnosed two years ago and now in remission. Others are not as unfortunate. That’s why I’m Rucking this July to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphona Society. 150 miles.
