Why Festivus is special
As a Christmas alternative or pre-celebration, you can't beat Festivus. Plus, for paid subscribers, how to search within a Substack.
“The Strike” was a classic Seinfeld for more reasons than being funny.
Why it matters
Many people don’t celebrate Christmas. Others do but the holiday is filled with many family obligations. The “fictional” Festivus provides a harmless slice of rebellion.
Why I celebrate Festivus
Airing of grievances? Some might say that’s a year-round thing for yours truly.
Feats of strength? Not really sure my daughter feels a need to pin me.
Aluminum pole? That’s every bit as distracting and troubling as tinsel.
My reason: my stepson.
Going deeper
When his mother and I split, Chad was worried about spending time with all his parents at Christmas. I told him not to sweat it, that I wasn’t huge on Christmas anymore.
That’s when we made the pact to celebrate Festivus on December 23 at Texas Roadhouse.
Sadly, Festivus with Chad never happened. Yet it’s a tradition of celebration I’ve held onto with those who loved him, those who would have loved him and just love the idea.
Happy Festivus
Here’s wishing you a Festivus miracle of your own.
