Why Mailchimp open rates are lower in 2024

Many marketers, including yours truly, are wondering why Mailchimp open rates seem lower in 2024.

Why it matters

In 2022, according to this deliverability report, Mailchimp had one of the better deliverability rates at 81 percent. As somebody who uses MC for some clients, the drop has been noticeable with an up to 50 percent decrease in opens.

According to MailModo.com, some possible explanations for the decline in opens include:

  • Not testing subject lines

  • Emails ending up under the Promotions tab (in Gmail)

  • Not personalizing your content

  • All or some of the above

Solutions

Testing subject lines is always a great idea. If your subject lines are too long, too vague or too cute, it can turn off readers who want a reason as to why they should click PDQ.

Many people use Gmail or other free accounts for their newsletter subscriptions to avoid mixing clutter with their work emails. Providing an explanation to your readers on how to move your newsletter to the main inbox can be helpful.

And then there’s personalizing your content.

Some think that means using a first name field in the subject line or greeting. That may help. Yet making your writing more personal means giving them stories and content they can relate to…and then providing a possible direction.

Kind of like what I just did.

What the ruck?

This month, I will be “rucking” to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The target number of miles is 150 by either walking, running or biking.

Why it matters

  1. My mother was diagnosed with leukemia in 2022. She is still in the fight.

  2. Every 3 minutes someone in the US is diagnosed with a blood cancer.

  3. Donations support doctors like Dr. Christopher Flowers and their work, helping MORE underrecognized patients gain access to therapies they may not have previously been able to.

Rucking?

My next office accessory

Smead Cascading Wall Organizer, 6 Removable Folder Pockets, Letter Size, Gray/Bright Pockets (92060)

Why it matters

File cabinets take up a lot of room in a home office. Even if you give it an additional function like putting your printer on top.

Additionally, how many of those files do we actually need to access on a weekly or monthly basis.

Going deeper

The cascading wall organizer gives you easy access to the files you use most frequently without sacrificing space. The colors will also brighten up your office.
