“Define irony: a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.”
Steve Buscemi’s character Garland Green uttered those words in the 1997 movie Con Air. It’s arguably the second best line in the movie.
What’s ironic about working from home?
People have been able to work from home for quite some time due to one thing: an internet connection.
Once again, God bless you, Al Gore.
Yet the true irony of this wonder is that we often lose connection, real connection to people. And without that many home workers fall into the trap of isolation. With isolation comes a whole host of issues—mental, physical, spiritual, etc.—that creates a very unhealthy situation. All those can dramatically impact the very reason we are working from home—our jobs/work/business.
My Home Office Hacks exists as a virtual water cooler where you can read about issues that affect the home office worker. I call it a virtual water cooler as a lot of the stuff My HOH will cover are topics in another life you would have talked about at the office water cooler, in the lunchroom or over a cup of coffee or other hot beverage (why do non-coffee drinkers need to remind the world they don’t drink coffee; it’s a concept, not literal).
The virtual water cooler will lack the office gossip and politics that invariably sneak into typical office talk. In its place the focus will steer towards things that improve the working from home experience. That can be anything from the best pens, headsets, productivity apps, computers, virtual backdrops, coffee suggestions and more. Even binder clips.
Working from home and binder clips.
If you have seen the video of all the uses for binder clips it should be right up there with all the classics: Gone with the Wind, Harold and Maude and the Karate Kid 2.
Home office workers delight in these types of hacks that make bring improved functionality to the home office experience. It’s also the kind of thing we would love to share with other home office workers.
That’s the purpose of this newsletter.
While I have my own thoughts on working from and will write about those ad nauseum for the foreseeable future, I’m interested in what other HOHs are out there—lighten up, folks. That stands for Home Office Hacks.
If you have a suggestion, send it along. Would love to share to share it with HOWs—that’s Home Office Workers.
That’s a connection we share. Bolstered by the connection that made it all possible, the Internet, we can bridge the lack of connection you can sometimes feel while working from home.
As for the best line from Con Air, it’s quite simple:
Again, people who work from home like simplicity. You certainly can’t get simpler than a rock.
See you again next week with another HOH for HOWs. If you like this tip, please share with your social media peeps.
