Also since 2002 - some jobs had "local" offices (more than a 30min drive) so it was more of a hybrid, others were pure remote. And loving it! In fact one of the things (not THE thing, but it was on the list) that pushed me over the edge to leave the corporate world/my last job and start my photography business was when the CEO of my last company (who worked in CA) wanted me to commute every day to Cambridge (vs. going in as needed). Told him to (politely) "take this job and shove it" - I wound up consulting with them for a year after I left while I started my photography business.
My biggest challenge was getting friends and family to understand that I am actually working and that being at home doesn't mean I'm available for every school pickup or carpool situation on Earth.
I've been working from home before it was cool. I started WFH one day a week in 2003, while I was doing hard time at Fidelity. It helped with having a newborn, for sure. Then, when I left corporate in 2005, I started consulting, and it was 100% WFH. Over the years I've had various WFH arrangements and now as a solopreneur, it's a 100% WFH gig.
I have a very similar story, Judi. I was downsized out of Arbella Insurance but continued to freelance for them while I looked for work. Jobs were scarce post-9/11 and with two wars going on. So, I started looking for projects. That's when I decided to be a business, which I also did with a little one in the house while getting my stepchildren to their activities.

I get it, Barry?
What is your biggest WFH challenge?
Not feeling guilty if I'm taking a break....
That is so true. The only boss you answer to you is you. Though many people who work remotely are working for a boss. I wonder if it feels different?
Dunno, and I'd rather work for me....:-)

That one happens to this day 😁
