The recent My HOH, What are the three ways you improved your home office experience in 2022, elicited a rather interesting comment from Dr. LaNysha Adams, PhD, publisher of the Substack, The 3/31 by Dr. Adams. Asked about what improvements she made to her home office experience, Dr. Adams responded:
“I added four new art pieces to my home office and one to my office space! I also got rid of one bookshelf to create more space on the walls to add my art. That really changed some of the energy in the space.”
Dr. Adams makes a great point. What you remove is every bit as important as what you put in its place. That got me looking at my office in a new way.
Now, yours truly has two offices. One at home, which has a great view. The other is at my mother’s house for when I’m there to help her, which has been a lot more the last six months as she battles an illness. I’ve kept the status quo at the office at my mother’s because I thought it would be temporary and far less of my time would be spent there. Since I’m actually spending more time there, I knew the view needed some work.
Specifically, the bookshelves.
Those are filled with books and other things from my late father. While we have not yet decided who gets what and where those go, I decided to move them to a lower shelf, out of my sight line. The shelves I can see, I’ve put a few personal items. Enough to create a pleasing view without creating clutter.
The out of sight shelves look more like this:
Not bad, huh?
What’s your view look like? Does it need a purge? Send a before/after to us and we’ll share it in an upcoming My HOH.

Inspiring quote of the week
“In the book of life, the answers aren’t in the back.”—Charlie Brown (AKA Charles Schultz)
How cool to be reading this week's newsletter and see an extension of an idea! Love that. I've extended this "removal" idea to other areas of life: an old futon that was taking up space in my basement (soon to be replaced with a Peloton bike) and a bunch of books so that I can make progress on my goal to give away more books than I purchase. I am NOT counting ebooks. LMAO.
