Not since Bob Cratchit has an employee or, in the case of Twitter employees, been given such an ultimatum.
Be prepared to work in a ultimatum to commit to working in an “extremely hardcore” fashion at the company or leave.
Oh yeah, and you decide by Thanksgiving.
Leave it to Musk to make Ebeneezer Scrooge sound like an old softy:
“But I suppose you must have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next morning."
Well, it’s safe to say most MHackers do not work for Twitter. Many of us use Twitter as part of our social media efforts. For those of you who are Substack writers, Twitter might have been how you signed up. You also might post your latest work there. So the question needs to be asked:
Are you ready to leave Twitter?
Beyond Elon Musk’s attitude towards workers and how many will actually be left to run the site and moderate content, there’s the $8 a month fee for a blue check. Then the welcoming back of people back who previously were removed from the site for spreading falsehoods. For most people, those things might not be enough to make a move until it actually affects them (can you tell I have the free membership?).
At this point having a Twitter is fast approaching spilling water on the front of your pants. You hope people don’t see it but if they do, it’s easily explainable:
“I have a lot of followers” or “I don’t really use it that much.”
That’s mys stance. For now. Yet when more people start asking about that stain on my pants, it might be time to change.
How do you feel about Twitter? Feel like sharing? Take the poll below or leave a comment.
Speaking of change, check out the Substack Reader
People who work from home tend to be notorious creatures of habit. Until they find something that works better. Then they become addicts to that particular practice. You could say that’s happened with me and the Substack Reader.
There are so many great Substack reads. Many of you are here because you also subscribe to other great Substack newsletters—e.g. Rick’s Tech Tips, Work3 (formerly The Chase), etc. You know what I mean.
Seeing all those newsletters as emails in your in box can be overwhelming. Seeing them in the Substack reader is not quite as daunting. Particularly when you are somewhere killing time and have your phone and you want to do something a little more productive than check out your social media pages. Its great for public transportation. Far less cumbersome than dragging a paperback or hard cover around.
Anyway, here’s a link. It’s available in both iOS and Android.
Gratitude and Excel spreadsheets
As it is Thanksgiving week, I would like to share my gratitude with My Home Office Hacks readers and Substack for providing such a great forum to share. In the coming weeks, we’ll be upping the ante here at My HOH and you will see some great changes and features. We want to be the best Work From Home pub out there. If you have any suggestions for content, please let me know.
To say thank you even more properly, here’s a link to a page with some very useful tips and shortcuts for using Excel. Some people, you know who you are, have a spreadsheet for just about every activity—including bowel movements. Some of these tips might help. The tracking, not the other thing.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Inspiring quote of the week
“I believe that the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” —Viola Davis
I've already stopped using Twitter, since E.M. took over. I've moved over to another site, but I definitely miss Twitter. I mostly used it for breaking news and linking to things I found interesting. There doesn't seem to be anything that fills that gap for me now. I'm not a "video" person so TikTok is of no interest to me.
