The Digital Mom Challenge: Tips for working from home with kids
Can you work from home with kids? Some have no choice. Here are some pointers from somebody who found a way to make it work.
Sarah Gallagher Trombley, Marketing Advisor at Wolfs Lane Consulting and publisher of Thoughts from a digital mom, challenged me to come up with some hacks for working from home with kids.
Create a workstation for your child – Natural curiosity will bring them to where you are working. Creating a workstation can make them feel like they are working, too. For my daughter, her workstation was a make believe beauty salon. At other times it was a kitchen. She also had her own desk.
Public libraries – Depends on the kids, sure. Yet the public library can be a haven for WFH parents. Find your child a handful of books, then fire up the laptop and get to work. Its even better if your library has programs for kids and you can drop them there while you work.
Be mobile within your home – My basement office was a haven. Yet to effectively watch and/or be there her meant working at the kitchen table or another part of the house while she was occupied with an activity or show on TV.
BONUS TIP –Call it bad parenting, yet some of the best babysitters my daughter had were Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. This fueled her imagination and nurtured a love of music that continues to this day. She release her first album last summer. Yet the best babysitter of all was the wedding of William and Kate.
